Organic Farming – At the Crossroads: Barbados
The Organic farming-At the Crossroads: Barbados project focuses on preventing land degradation via the use of organic farming for the production of indigenous herbs to be used in the local manufacturing sector. In addition, the project provides an opportunity for homeless persons to be reintegrated into society and gain meaningful employment.
The project seeks to establish a sustainable organic farm to produce indigenous foods and herbs and which can serve as a rehabilitative tool for vagrants/homeless persons.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
1. To contribute to national efforts related to sustainable land management and agro-biodiversity conservation through the development and sustainable operation of an organic farm which focuses on the production of indigenous plants which can be used in the natural products and food and beverage industries
2. To improve the capacity of the BVHS to manage a sustainable organic farm
3. To train a minimum of 24 homeless persons in organic farming and management
4. To establish a viable business enterprise based on the conservation and production of indigenous plants for the health and wellness and culinary sectors
5. To document the use of the proposed farming model as a viable mechanism in the rehabilitation process of homeless people.
